The ad appeared to invite Facebook users to learn more about bitcoin and perhaps other cryptocurrencies. Over the course of several hours, we slowly uncovered a series of crypto scams that had been hosted on Messenger for at least several weeks. Meta owns both Facebook and Messenger.

Are Facebook Crooks giving away a hefty amount of bitcoin?

The crooks post comments on the targeted business's Facebook page, claiming that it has established a partnership with Bitcoin and is giving away a hefty sum of free cryptocurrency. The posts are a type of advance fee scam (like the infamous Nigerian Prince email hoax), and requests that readers send a fee in Bitcoin to "verify their address".

Adkins also said to watch out for anything on social media that promises an immediate financial gain without much effort, especially anything that involves Bitcoin, Venmo, or CashApp. “It’s not that these sites or programs are in and of themselves bad. It’s, unfortunately, that scammers are using them to practice their scams,” Adkins said.
